Altmuhl river cycling

This ride began in Regensburg. I followed the Danube to Kelheim, then turned into the Altmuhl Valley, passing through countless little towns before reaching Eichstatt. It was my first real long-distance cycling trip, and somehow it happened in Germany.

A few cycling routes that overlap with this journey are the Donau Radweg (Tour of Baroque) and the Limes Radweg. The Limes was the fortified frontier of the Roman Empire, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I came away with two impressions. First, Germany is really agricultural: wherever I ride, I'm surrounded by endless fields.

Second, there are so many outdoor enthusiasts. During just two days, I saw people kayaking, sailing, floating in hot-air balloons, paragliding, ultralight aviation, camping, touring in camper vans, and even riding recumbent bicycles. It felt like they turned the green countryside into a giant playground.
