Mt. Bromo & Semeru

Bromo is famous for rising out of an enormous volcanic caldera. That day, my wife and I hired a 4WD jeep to cross the vast basin, and then joined the local hikers for a short trek of a few hours.

By evening, we reached Lake Kumbolo at the foot of Mount Semeru (very active) and camped by the lake. This seems a classic hiking route.

The next day, we retraced our steps in pouring rain. After a miserable climb up to the rim of Mount Bromo, we managed a quick look into the giant smoking crater, caught a lungful of sharp sulfur fumes, and promptly made our escape.
