Shaanxi section II

The second section of the Great Wall I hiked in Shaanxi started from Yulin. Because of the bitter cold, and because my gear was not quite sufficient for winter, I switched to a combination of walking and taking local transport.

Starting at Zhenbeitai watchtower, I continued through Changle fort and Jian’an fort to Gaojia fort, before taking a vehicle onward to Shenmu and Fugu.

The final course of the Great Wall near Mazhen in Fugu County is rather interesting. From Mazhen, it climbs eastward over a mountain and leaves Shaanxi, entering a small corner of Inner Mongolia, which still lies north of the Yellow River. Crossing the river by bridge from there brings you into Hequ, Shanxi.

From Luoquan fort in Hequ onward, the Great Wall keeps close company with the Yellow River all the way to Laoniuwan near Pianguan.
