The Ku Bu Qi is the 7th biggest desert in China, and means a "bow" in Mongolian. I was a novice then, but too bold to solo the desert only with a compass. Hiking the desert is difficult because you need to carry lots of water and the navigation is challenging.
It was north China, dry and hot in June. My body was so dehydrated that I found my mouth unable to secrete any saliva when chewing, so I had only to swallow the food by force. After more than 10 hours of harsh hiking, I was still in the middle of endless seas of sand hills.
It was out of my expectation and my food was used up. So I finally decided to quit by taking a shortcut route. The lesson learned: don't enter a desert without a GPS.
